The River Chirripo runs down the centre of the valley, and during recent Storm Nate, the bridge linking the main part of the reserve to the northern side of the valley was washed away. The Don Victor trails have also been destroyed by landslides. Generally, the old growth forest occurs in the top third of the southern valley side, and re-planted forest of about 30-40 years make up the remaining two-thirds.
